Background of College
Samata Shikshan Sanstha, Pune is a registered social service agency established in 1972 under the leadership of Prof. Vilas Wagh with a very broad vision to serve the down-trodden and weaker sections of the society. Since its inception, it has been rendering social service to the society through a number of programs and activities such as Ashram Schools, Hostel for poor girls and boys and children’s homes etc.
The organization functions on a strong conviction that people can make a difference in the lives of many of those who are less fortunate fellow beings of the society. In response to the problems of the people and needs of the area, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Social Work was started by Samata Shikshan Sanstha in the year 1995-96 at Morane ( Nakane) Tal & Dist Dhule.
Right since the start, the College has been facing several challenges – initially only the MSW programme was introduced and classes were held in one classroom of the adjoining Ashram School. The college realized the need of students in these rural areas for a bachelor‘s course and started the BSW – three years UG course from June 1999. From 1995 to 2005, the College functioned without any financial aid and had to manage with only 2 full – time faculty members. After financially supporting the College for 10 years, finally in 2005 the Management managed to receive grant from the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance, Government of Maharashtra. Even today, running the College is an up-hill task; like all other villages, Morane faces problems of basic amenities and lack of electricity due to power cuts for 6 hours every day. Majority of the students come from rural areas and belong to socially and economically marginalized sections. They come with very limited exposure to the outside world as well as modern technology. Some of them have to travel around 10 to 12 kilometers every day to attend college. Many of them have to work as agricultural laborers to support their education. However, these problems have not deterred us, in fact our commitment to our mission has become even stronger and we are determined to keep striving towards imparting quality education and making a difference.
Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Social Work is affiliated to North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon and financially supported by Department of Social Welfare, Government of Maharashtra. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Bangalore constituted by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, has accredited with CGPA of 2.52 on four point scale at B grade in June 2015. The College is registered under 12(B) Act of the University Grants Commission.
The College imparts training in social Work both at undergraduate as well as post- graduate levels, leading to three year Bachelor’s of Social Work ( BSW) and Two Years Master’s of Social Work (MSW) courses respectively. Both the Courses are generic in nature but likely to have one or two more specializations so as to prepare the students to accept the challenges and take up the responsibilities of working with people having different problems and areas having their own needs with holistic and participative approach. The whole process of social work education and training followed by the College of social work includes class- room teaching of theory subjects, field work practice and practical research in respective areas and fields. The Social Work training also emphasizes on exposure of students to the field realities and socio-economic conditions of the people living in rural, tribal and urban areas. Students are also involved in regular well scheduled individual conferences, group discussion, paper presentation, seminars, workshops, rural camps and study tours etc.
The College is located on Dhule – Sakri Road at Morane about 7 kms from the main city and situated in the premises having about 3.00 acres of land. It has its own library and reading room with more than 9000 books, journals and magazines on the subjects related to social Work.
The faculty comprises of well qualified and experienced teachers in their respective fields of specialization. Both, teaching and non-teaching staff of the College work as a team having close and personal touch with the students and day to day functioning of the College. The students and staff are involved in various academic, practical and extracurricular activities of the College.
